My red-tailed female was pregnant for approximately 2 months when, 1 week and 2 days ago, she dropped her bundle! There are now about 30-40 fry happily swimming about. They don’t seem to hide, they really stay out in the open more than anything, which is fine since the adults don’t seem that interested anyway.

Well, all of the older fry are starting to get their colour! Some of them still have their clear tails, but two or three of them are starting to get some beautiful colours and patterns. they are now 4 weeks, 3 days old! Going to be a stunning lot.

I am trying to convert my tank from fake marine decorations to more realistic plastic and silk plants. Yesterday I paid a visit to the pet shop and got a small chunk of driftwood. After one night’s soaking in warm water, it was ready to go in and it really does look just great!

Please welcome to the Community Tank 3 stunning, fairly young black kuhlie loaches! The first day i got them they were very lively, but now they have become more shy. I only just got them yesterday, so i can’t wait to see if they are any more active after dark!

After soaking the driftwood i had to make some room for it in the tank, so i re-arranged a little bit. I took out 2 fake anemones, but left a long, thin yellow one in the tank. The guppies seem to really like it, and it’s been in there ever since i got the tank. The two i removed are now in the goldfish tank.

There have been some small changes to my tank plans. here is the current list:

5x swordtails

3x platy (get 2 more, already have 1)

3x molly (get 2 more, already have 1)

2x pearl gourami (aggressive?)

15x cardinal tetras

10x rummy-nose tetras

6x fancy guppies (3 I currently breed, hoping to keep 3 of the fry)

6x angelfish (thinking of reducing to 2-4)

3x black kuhlie loaches (already have)

AND EiTHER:

4-6x upside down catfish

OR

1x bristlenose pleco

OR

1x rubberlip pleco

OR

4-6x corydoras catfish

if the gourami’s turn out to be too aggressive, then i will instead get 2x dwarf gourami (gold), 2x dwarf gourami (common colouration). I would love to get some honey gourami’s of the true 3 spot variety, but apparantly they have some problems with territory and aggression. The reason I am thinking of reducing the angels is because of their cichlid breeding behaviour- I don’t want them to harm my other fish. Since it is a planted tank, i am hoping the majority of the cardinals will be able to escape the angels. if i have too many problems (hopefully the angels will be happy with each other and won’t pay much attention to the other fish) then i might (regretfully) have to return, give away or sell the cardinals.

Can’t wait for the new aquarium. No changes with the plans for the decor, i still want it plants, but i am thinking of mostly plastic/silk plants. tough decision! either way, i hope it will look great…

Today I got a few things:

A 9 inch (23 cm) plastic Water Wonders ‘Red Ludwigia’ decorative aquarium plant

Small ceramic turtle ornament for the Green Tank

Two medium golden apple snails

A new light (finally!)

Hear are osme details on my new light:

BRAND: ToM/ OSCAR (???)

POWER:

24 watts

230 volts

50 HZ

Features:

Adjustable length (18″-24.5″)

Daylight 24W flourescent bulb

Waterproof design

Plug-in ballast

Lift-up stand included

On/off swich

I’m very happy with it. Because of the stand i can use it even without a tank lid.

I will be getting a custom cut sheet of glass cut soon with a small hole at the back for a heater, another small hole for cable leads and a skinny strip at the front for feeding. That is how i would like it, my ‘ultimate design’.

Lastly, I have gotten a tank treatment for the Blue Room (1 molly, 1 platy). I have realised they have itchy gills. No visible parasites or skin abnormalities. It appears to be only their gills that are itchy. I was stumped as to what it could be so I headed to my local pet store to ask. There is one staff member that is specificly knowlageble in aquatics. He reccomended an ich treatment to me. Aristopet is the brand. The lable reads the name ‘Aqua Master; Rapid White Spot Remedy’. He said don’t be put off by the name, it does more than that. I have already seen improvements. It is currently the fourth day of treatment. I hope to see it completely clear up the situation, it appears to already be well on the way, which is a good sign!

Well, first of all:

I have more guppy fry! This time I am keeping them in the community tank to see for future reference if they can survive. I had virtually no hiding spots in my tank but I spottend them shortly after birth and was able to put in some hiding spots before they were eaten. i put in lots of little things like the lid and removeable bottom of a breeder tank, an old plastic plant, some fry screen etc. i have spotted about 10 still alive and swimming about happily in the tank amongst the adults who, surprisingly, seem to take no notice to them. maybe they cann’t see them?

Next, I went to the petshop again today!

This time i picked up a few things, mainly for the benifit of my guppy fry.

Sponge filter:

I got a sponge filter to use untill my guppy fry get a little (or a lot) bigger. it’s a pretty big one! The box says it’s an Aqua One FilterAir 136. it’s the biggest one they had available at the pet store and cost me AU$20.00.

Fake Plants:

These are plastic and bushy. they came in a pack of four. Their length is adjustable, the stem is a click-together kind of a design. It looks kind of like foxtail, but there is more than one variety of plant, all are slightly different shape and colour.

HBH brand ‘BABY BITES’

This is a very fine powder like substance. It’s apparantly really good for developing fish. Here are just a few of the ingredients:

Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids, fish meal, krill meal, squid meal, calcium and a whole heap of different kinds of vitamins.

Sound good? The person at the pet store seemed to know what he was doing. He highly reccomended it to me and said that he knows many professional breeders that buy it regularly. while it is a small container, you only need such a tiny bit each feeding. it will last me for months! When they get big enough I will treat the whole tank to some live bloodworm, brine shrimp or maybe some white worms. I don’t know too much about them but the pet store said they usually carry them. I also have freeze dried bloodworms they get fed a few times a week. I really hope at least a couple of these fry grow up to be healthy!

So, anyway, now my tank is pretty much fully equiped. Filtration is provided, there are many hiding spots through out the tank and I have a variety of foods on hand. Bunch of pretty lucky guppies if you ask me!
